Warm Mineral Springs Park Complex given historic designation

Post Date:09/12/2019 5:56 PM

After a lengthy application process, the City of North Port is excited to announce the National Park Service has officially listed the Warm Mineral Springs Building Complex in the National Register of Historic Places. This follows the Springs itself which received the same designation in 1977. The City of North Port took full ownership of the entire complex in September 2014. This will help us expedite and work towards restoring these historically significant buildings as part of the City’s Warm Mineral Springs Park Master Plan.

As part of the Warm Mineral Springs Park Master Plan process, City staff worked with Kimley-Horn & Associates and Lorrie Muldowney, President of Creative Preservation, LLC., to submit a nomination in November 2018 to add the park’s three existing buildings to the National Register of Historic Places on behalf of the City of North Port.

WMSP is historically significant to the social history of Florida because it served as a site for the second phase of Florida’s Quadricentennial. For three months, beginning in December 1959, 400 years of Florida’s history was celebrated. The opening ceremony for the Quadricentennial attracted 14,000 visitors. WMSP park, spa, and cyclorama are significant to the recreational history of Florida because it operated continuously from March 15, 1960 to July 1, 2013. It was temporarily closed and re-opened for swimming in April 2014. Today, more than 100,000 visitors come from all over the world to experience its mineral-rich waters.

The buildings are significant as examples of the Sarasota School of Architecture as they were designed, in 1959, by architect Jack West, a leader of the movement. The movement adapted the International Style of architecture to the climate and geographical setting of southwest Florida.
