Solid Waste starting COVID-19 precautions on April 6

Post Date:03/30/2020 10:02 AM

We are all working hard to protect our community.  For the health and safety of our North Port Solid Waste staff, the following temporary changes to collection will start on Monday, April 6, 2020, due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic:

1. Automated garbage and recycling collection will continue as normal. However, non-automated collection will be suspended.  Studies suggest COVID-19 can last on surfaces several days.  Suspending non-automated collection helps protect our staff from touching thousands of different surfaces during the week.  Items placed outside of your garbage or recycling tote will NOT be collected.  If you have extra material one week, call Public Works at 941-240-8050 and Solid Waste will make a return trip within 24 hours to collect it at no additional charge.

2. North Port Solid Waste continues to work through the COVID-19 pandemic, while working to stop the spread. We want all our residents to know that we are still picking up yard debris. All you need to do is bundle it with twine or put it in paper bags and set it at the curb where you normally do. Please then call Public Works at 941-240-8050 to schedule a pickup. Out of an abundance of caution, we want to use our claw truck instead of having our men and women physically touch containers/material as they work throughout the City. However, we only have so many of these cool trucks. It’s one extra, simple step we’re hoping you can take in order to help protect our great community. Also, as a courtesy for our residents, three residential drop off locations will be available (see below).  Residential yard waste refers to debris from routine residential yard maintenance only.  Debris from land clearing or removing all of the trees from the property where the house is located or adjacent vacant properties is not eligible to be collected as residential yard waste.

There will be no charge to use these locations, but residents must be prepared to load the yard waste on Solid Waste trucks themselves:

Small amounts of yard waste – 5 bag/bundle limit

  • Public Works Facility – Solid Waste Entrance (1930 W. Price Blvd)
    8:00am-2:00pm | Monday – Friday

Large amounts of yard waste – 5 cubic yard limit (approx. a truck bed of debris)

  • Public Works Facility - Operations Entrance (1890 W. Price Blvd)
    8:00am-12pm | Open Saturday only
  • Parks Maintenance Facility (5455 Pan American Blvd)
    8:00am-12pm | Open Saturday only

3. Bulk garbage and bulk yard waste (all sizes) will continue to be collected by our claw truck.  Temporarily, there will be no charge for these collections.  However, it must be scheduled by calling Public Works at 941-240-8050.We will clean it up to the best of our ability.

Our Solid Waste staff is a vital part of our City and we need to keep employees safe.  For more information about these updates, please call Public Works at 941-240-8050.
