The Training Division's mission is to provide the highest quality training to our members so that they have the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to safely mitigate fire/medical/hazardous emergency incidents. The Division is staffed with one full-time Battalion Chief and is supplemented with Department personnel who serve as additional instructors.
The Division is dedicated to training personnel in the following areas:
- Training and orientation to all new employees
- Continuous training on the newest strategies and techniques, as well as the fundamentals of firefighting
- Medical training to keep our personnel abreast of the newest skills, techniques and pharmaceuticals in the field
- Re-certification training for medical knowledge, skills and abilities
- Liaison to Human Resources for the administering of promotional tests
- Research and development for new equipment and procedures
The training of personnel is an ongoing process. The Training Division is responsible for ensuring that all Fire Rescue personnel maintain certification in all aspects of emergency response, including fire suppression skills, Basic and Advanced Life Support treatment and skills.
The Training Division is responsible for the Department's Safety and Health Programs. The mission of the Safety and Health Programs are, and shall remain, the total elimination of all occupational accidents, injuries, illnesses, and exposures to hazardous atmospheres and contagious diseases.
The Department Safety and Health Programs include review of the following material:
- Plan, develop, coordinate and implement Occupational Safety and Health Program that complies with NFPA 1500, Standard for Occupational Safety and Health Program, NFPA 1521.
- Chair the department Safety Committee for the investigating and reporting of accidents and injuries; inspect facilities, vehicles, equipment and protective clothing for compliance to national standards
- Reviewing of accident and injury reports to determine need for corrective actions, preventive measures, additional training or procedural changes
- Infection Control Plan and Training
- Scene Safety Officer during emergency operations and training exercises
- Annual Physical Fitness Assessments
- Provide awareness about health and safety issues for firefighters
Although the work done by the fire department is inherently dangerous, the Department's Safety and Health Programs shall provide members with the safest working environment possible and relies on participation of management and employees alike to accomplish the goals of the programs.
Active participation at all levels is necessary to reach the goals for the Safety and Health Programs. Members must comply with all aspects of these programs to guarantee a safe and healthy working environment for all.
