The City of North Port desires to use their existing 85 mile canal system for connectivity, recreation and education. The consultants Kimley Horn and Associates analyzed existing conditions and developed a master plan that would identify opportunities and constraints within the City's canal system, also referred to as Blueways. Navigating around the abundance of water control structures will prove to be a primary obstacle and the plan calls for portage facilities to accommodate circulating around these obstacles. The Canal & Creek Master Plan consists of five phases with the first phase completed in January of 2016. Phase 1 focused on connectivity of water based recreation at Blue Ridge, McKibben, Dallas White, and Butler parks.
In addition to Phase I, a canoe/kayak launch access point was installed on the Snover Waterway behind City Hall. This access point is detailed in Phase 3A of the Canal and Creek Master Plan.
