DOUBLE EXCELSIOR - Reaccreditation 2018
February 2018 marked the Double Excelsior Recognition status for the department. The Excelsior Recognition became the highest level of achievement in Florida accreditation a criminal justice agency can receive. The North Port Police Department is one of only 18 police departments in the state of Florida which currently carries as Excelsior Re-Accreditation status. Excelsior status means the department has received 15 years worth of continuous Re-Accreditation with no conditions (violations).
An accreditation program has long been recognized as a means of maintaining the highest standards of professionalism. Accreditation is the certification by an independent reviewing authority that an entity has met specific requirements and prescribed standards. Schools, universities, and hospitals are some of the most well-known organizations required to maintain accreditation. Once an agency is accredited they are reviewed for reaccreditation every three (3) years. The North Port Police Department was first accredited in 2000, and received reaccreditation status in 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012, 2015 and 2018.
In 1993, Florida Statute 943.125 directed that the Florida Sheriffs Association and the Florida Police Chiefs Association create a voluntary law enforcement accreditation program.
Our commitment is being an accredited agency holding the North Port Police Department to a high quality of standards and expectations. It is our commitment to maintain this level of performance and continue to deliver the quality of service our citizens have come to expect.
